CRITERIA:

Completion of the three (3) Components of Balanced Literacy With Strategies for Pathways 2.0 online courses by Dr. Sandra Doran and all of the required assignments and readings to gain the knowledge and pedagogical skills to establish an effective Balanced Literacy program. These comprehensive courses, An Introduction to the Components of Balanced Literacy With Strategies for Pathways 2.0, Components of Balanced Literacy With Strategies for Pathways 2.0 – Part A, and Components of Balanced Literacy With Strategies for Pathways 2.0 – Part B provided the teacher with the following learning objectives and resources:

            1. An Introduction to the Components of Balanced Literacy With Strategies for Pathways 2.0
              • Gained a basic understanding of the history that led to the need for balanced literacy instruction
              • Understood the goals of a balanced literacy program
              • Discovered the objectives of all lessons in Parts A and B of our Balanced Literacy course
              • Grasped the connection between Pathways 2.0 (Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and Word Study) and a balanced literacy program

              • Understood how to use running records to assess students for small group instruction
              • Learned five (5) steps for delivering small group instruction
              • Watched over ninety (90) minutes of instructional video content
              • Discovered how to create small groups for guided reading lessons
              • Learned the do’s and don’ts for setting up effective literacy rotations
              • Devised new methods for teaching comprehension skills

              • Discovered the importance of setting up a sequential and systematic program for Word Work
              • Learned multi-sensory practices for delivering phonetic instruction
              • Watched a 20-minute video depicting a Writer’s Workshop in action as a model for creating their own Writer’s Workshop
              • Learned techniques to build students’ fluency in writing
